Internship experience leads Penn State alumna to create nonprofit to help 海地

阿宾顿,爸爸. — Carine Dorlus needed a 15-week internship to fulfill graduation requirements in the rehabilitation and human services (英国皇家科学院)主修 宾州州立大学阿宾顿分校. After her adviser informed her that 她 could go around the corner or even around the world to complete it, 她 chose to travel to her parents’ native 海地. 

Fast-forward two years since earning her degree at 阿宾顿, and Dorlus has dedicated herself to lifting up the people of the island nation by writing an inspirational book, 《易胜博》,“建立一个非营利组织, Philly4海地.

“'The Road to Purpose' is the record of my personal journey through my parents’ homeland of 海地,多勒斯说, who is saving the book profits to 构建 a home for a 海地an family. “The goal of Philly4海地 is to curate experiences and give people around the world a taste of the beauty of 海地 while they give back. Some volunteers have never been out of the United States before.”

海地是 poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, 受文盲困扰, staggering unemployment and poverty rates; recovery efforts continue more than two years after Hurricane Matthew's devastation in 2016. It was this precarious environment that Dorlus plunged into for her internship through the organization 恩典的使命.

Anthony Strazza, an assistant teaching professor of RHS, said, "她比 we 知道. 她比 知道."

Although 她 had been to 海地 twice before with her parents, Dorlus was traveling alone this time as 她 journeyed to Carries, a village that was nearly obliterated by a mudslide in 2015. It lies about an hour outside the capital city of Port-Au-Prince.

"There is a soup kitchen that serves people seven days a week, 两个孤儿院, 老人之家, 还有一个社区学校,”她说。, describing the services at the location where 她 was placed.

“I worked with special-needs children at an orphanage and at the local school,“Dorlus, who is fluent in 海地an Creole, 继续. “But my outreach surpassed my initial expectations. I wound up mentoring at-risk youth, too.” 

Her work ranged from teaching children letter and number recognition, to developing an exercise plan for a child with spina bifida.

Dorlus was so moved by her experiences that 她 made herself a promise. 

“When I fini她d my internship, I would go back to 海地 to fulfill my purpose,”她说。. “I 知道 I must give back to 海地.”

She has returned to 海地 six times since 2017.

Strazza, the RHS faculty member, has served as a mentor to Dorlus.

“Carine came to 宾州州立大学阿宾顿分校 prepackaged with the aptitude, 核心价值, and the passion to make a difference in the lives of the disadvantaged and persons with disabilities,他说.

Strazza believes that her internship experience in 海地 fueled her holistic growth and development.
